  • 4 Muddy Boots Welcome

I visited this typical Chilterns pub in June 2008 with my Ramblers group - never the easiest of groups to cater for, as we don't know exact numbers until the actual morning of the walk (usually 20-30 people) or exactly what we're all going to want to eat. To make things easier for the pub we usually book well in advance, phone the order through at 10am on the day, then arrive at lunchtime looking hungry and thirsty. The pub chosen varies from week to week and some cope much better than others, but I think The Wheel in Naphill - which changed hands recently, I believe - is one of those that deserves a special mention.I think I can speak for everyone in my group when I say that we all really enjoyed our food that day. Chips are replaced by sautéed potatoes on the menu, which seemed a bit odd until I actually tasted them - crispy and golden and piping hot. I chose to have mine with some deliciously meaty chilli con carne, instead of rice. Others chose chunky sandwiches which came with crisps on the side and really good quality fillings. One of us had a dessert too - a homemade blackberry and apple pie with ice cream, which looked so good it caused quite a sensation when it came out. I seem to recall they had some decent cider as well. Everything was reasonably priced, served promptly and with a smile. Above all we were made to feel welcome, which sadly isn't always the case with walkers - even nice jolly ones like us.No fancy decor, just delicious grub, good value, a large grassy beer garden, and a warm welcome. We'll be going back!

    Lacrimosa
