In praise of designers.

In a box in the corner of my office, I have a selection of samples that I have compiled over the years. These are not your standard "file copies" or over-runs on jobs that naturally accumulate, but a small bunch of "special" samples. These "special" samples come from the jobs that have stood out in a sea of mediocrity; the ones that look, or feel, that little bit extra special; the ones you want to show to your friends and colleagues; the ones that fill you with a sense of pride every time you cast eyes upon them; the ones that make doing what we do (printing on plastic) worthwhile. But what exactly is it that makes those selected samples stand out from the crowd? After all, they are printed on the same press, using the same limited range of materials, and finished using the same equipment and methods. It is simply the quality of design. What makes these print jobs leap out at you is how the designer has managed to understand the idiosyncracies of using plastic. It is not simply a matter of choosing a good image, slick typography and clever layout, it is a far more complex process that delivers the best that print on plastic can offer. The best designs use the properties of the plastic substrate to add an extra dimension to the finished piece. Whether that is a clever use of clear or tinted material, the juxtaposition between gloss plastic and matt ink or varnish (or vice versa), the use of die-cutting and embossing, or the straight rigidity/flexibility of the material itself.I have been involved in the production of jobs that combined materials and processes that, at the preliminary stage, appeared cumbersome, over-produced and unnecessary, but it is these very jobs that have proved to be some of the most visually impressive pieces I've ever seen. For example, a plastic card that was printed 13 (yes, thirteen) special colours, then matt press polished and overprinted with a 14th gloss ink, was spectacular; an invitation created from 3 panels of 5mm thick luminescent acrylic screwed together had to be seen to be believed; a binder made from matt expanded PVC, blind embossed, screen printed and foil blocked in tight registration pushed technology to its limits; the press pack vacuum formed in a specially extruded, extra thick, tinted PVC, was produced on faith alone.Without the belief and vision of the designers involved, none of these items would ever have seen the light of day. Without creativity, printing, is printing, is printing. However, with genuine creative intuition, the humblest processes and materials can be elevated to a higher level, producing a product that represents far more than the sum of its constituent elements.I have the utmost respect for good designers. Without them, no matter how technologically innovative we are, our days would be filled with the mediocre. With them, the world's a better and more aesthetically pleasing place. So here's the challenge......plastic is tactile, durable, flexible and versatile; it comes in a multitude of types, thicknesses and finishes; it can be clear, tinted, coloured, opaque or have in-built effects; it can be cut, welded, drilled, punched, glued, embossed; it can be formed, moulded and distorted; it can be litho printed, screen printed, digitally printed and foil blocked......it can be anything you want it to be.So designers, why not put your mind to creating something really special in plastic next time you are confronted with the brief from hell?
